Hollywood man faces animal abuse charges after finding dog in horrific condition
HOLLYWOOD, Florida. A disturbing story of animal abuse unfolding in Broward County after a dog was found in such poor condition it had to be shot.
This dog owner is now under arrest.
An alert public service worker spotted the dog, saw the shocking scene, and notified police.
His name was Champion. A 12-14 year old pit sweater.
He was found behind a house at 5213 Wiley Street in Hollywood
He was lying on hot concrete in direct sunlight, extremely malnourished, full of open wounds. His hip bone and rib cage were visible.
The responding officer gave the dog water from a bottle, but he was too weak to walk.
This officer took Champ to the Hollywood Animal Hospital.
Deven Soto is with Good Karma Pet Rescue of South Florida. The nonprofit planned to pay for Champs emergency care and even had an aligned foster family.
These images are haunting, Soto said.
James McCrea, 61, was arrested and charged with animal abuse.
According to the police report, McCrea told police the dog belonged to his daughter, who moved to Georgia a year and a half ago.
The police report said there was no water and only old food in a bowl.
The dog had air pockets in his chest, heartworms and an old hip injury that was never treated. His labs were so bad he was going to need a blood transfusion.
But all the care in the world could not save Champ.
He had doctors working on him for days, Soto said. Every time he got a blood transfusion he would straighten up, then he would start to decline and there was a point … we knew it was time. We gave him the best possible chance.
There was another dog that the other dog also found at McCreas, also a pit bull. This dog was not in such bad shape and was confiscated by Broward Animal Care and Adoption.
