VidCon plans to return in summer 2021 and will allow people to attend digitally

VidCon, an annual convention focused on digital creators, tentatively plans to return to Anaheim, Calif., Next summer if conditions permit, but organizers are preparing to let people attend digitally for the first time.

The new digital option will allow people to purchase tickets for a number of live streaming sessions and key fan-focused sessions for those not or unable to make it to the convention. The move comes after VidCon found success in numerous digital sessions the convention hosted this year (known as VidCon Now) after the COVID-19 pandemic led organizers to decide to cancel the event in person.

Nearly a million people have tuned in to digital events hosted by VidCon in recent months, according to CEO Jim Louderback, adding that nearly half of that audience is streaming from outside the United States.

We have clearly demonstrated that VidCon transcends the boundaries of over 180 of them to be exact. Our new digital and IRL hybrid model will expand VidCons’ global reach with more new ways to be informed, entertained and inspired than ever before.

In order to reach a more international audience, the digital part of VidCons will also schedule different panels and sessions in partnership with VidCon Mexico and VidCon Asia. These signs will be created in a native language of the country and will be programmed for the appropriate time zones, according to a press release.

Along with VidCons’ new digital plans, the organization is also introducing a new branding meant to focus on all digital creators instead of focusing on YouTubers. This includes making VidCon Now events those digital panels and sessions that replaced a physical VidCon last summer throughout the year. VidCon Now, which features speakers and experts from YouTube, Instagram, Twitch, TikTok, and more, will resume on October 27.
