What if it was illegal to lie?
Ben H. Winters’ Golden State novella explores this idea in a Dick Tracy-Meet-Philip K. Dick novel filled with turns that are, for the most part, satisfying.
The book is set in an alternative version of California that values truth above all else. Cameras are everywhere, fiction is illegal, and citizens write daily records to keep records mandated by the government. Utopia is not.
Occasionally, characters will philosophize about the nature of truth. “And so the truth constantly blossoms outwards, and always – always – the speaker of the truth decides which piece of the same will mark, in this case, as essential,” one character muses during the character who stood out.
But if you are looking for a cerebral examination of reality and the challenges of conveying information in a nuanced world, look elsewhere. This is a page-turning, science-fiction friendly cop.
The plot focuses on a brawl between veterans with the sensitive side of Laszlo Ratešić and new recruiter Ays Paige who are assigned to a special unit dedicated to detecting liars. When you notice something off during a routine call, they are triggered for the most part of their careers.
The unique setting brings life to what should otherwise be a tired premise. Winters also has the book in clever detail, like a convention to greet others with irrefutable facts. “A cow has four bellies,” says one character, bypassing the greeting.
Winters is an old hand at connecting these genres. He is perhaps best known for “The Last Cop,” which follows a New Hampshire detective who is dizzyingly investigating death as the world prepares for an asteroid hit. At Golden State, the marriage of these elements is almost perfect – each serving to uplift the other and smooth out tropes that could otherwise be clogged.
The last part of the book is unable to reach the solid planning and creation of the world’s first two-thirds. However, by then the novel had built up more than enough goodwill to keep the reader afloat.
It’s also just plain fun. It’s not a lie.
