MARTINSBURGFor the sixth year, the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle welcomed guests, almost all dressed in one way or another in black dress, to their Little Black Dress event held this year at the Hollywood Casino during the Charles Town Races. Women (and some men) came together to help support the Born Learning Initiative, an important facet of the agency.
The initiative focuses on youth learning and early childhood development issues and works to put books in the hands of children and strengthen parental engagement programs in the Eastern Panhandle. As part of the Little Black Dress event, guests brought stacks of books to help support the Born Learning Initiative. CEO Penny Porter welcomed the crowd, thanking them for their generous donations of books which will now find their way into the hands of an excited child.
The Initiative continues to be a priority for United Way to ensure low-income children have access to books. Research indicates that many do not have books in their homes. Therefore, through this initiative, UWEP can help get these books into the hands of children in their own homes. The books are distributed at various events in the community throughout the year.
Porter also welcomed to the podium representatives of the two main sponsors, coming from the Diamond level, Proctor and Gamble and CNB Bank.
John Shaver, vice president of Tabler Station P&G, spoke about his company's continued support of the United Way, saying it has been contributing for 39 years.
P&G has partnered with United Way for many years, Shaver said. This is an important part of P&G, he added, recognizing the local Tabler Station group that works hard each year to generate high contributions. He said off the record that this year the company would contribute about $327,000 to the Eastern Panhandle agency.
Karen Richards, Senior Vice President of Marketing for CNB Bank, spoke about her commitment to also supporting United Way.
Our relationship with United Way is important to us, Richards said during his brief remarks.
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed delicious food at different stations around the ballroom as they waited for the highlight of the evening, the annual fashion show this year featuring different clothing options from Jordan & Hess, Westwood Charm and Grace Ryan Bridals, all local merchants. A variety of models donned sporty outfits and accessories, all available on local sites.
Additionally, guests competed throughout the evening for a variety of silent auction items, raising bids at the last moments for the chance to win great items, all in an effort to increase funds collected for the Born Learning Initiative.
