'Bridgerton Chronicles' Costume Designer John Glaser Talks Cressida's Red Dress
SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers from season 3 of “Bridgerton,” now streaming on Netflix.
There's nothing wrong with being “confident”, at least according to one Miss Cressida Cowper. Her superb red revenge dress in episode 6 of season 3 of “Bridgerton” is accompanied by lies: Cressida pretends to be Lady Whistledown.
While costume designer John Glaser says the red dress was dictated by the script, he felt the need to make it an entrance dress, complete with a huge bow in the back.
“It’s translucent, so it’s not giant or heavy,” says Glaser. “There is still some mystery in it. You don't really know where it stops, where it starts and you don't really know if it's a red dress.
Glaser attributes the color ambiguity to the layering of the dress: the underfabrics of the dress were hot pink, with the top being a deep burgundy, creating a dynamic red.
As for Cressida's fashion throughout the season, Glaser says the costume team pushed up her sleeves, creating an almost shoulder-length feel to her dresses, to “give her armor” due to her changing storylines throughout the season.
He says that even though they couldn't enhance the shoulders of the red dress in episode 6, the bow in the back added to its protection.
“It’s like an FU dress when she walks in,” Glaser says.
As for the real Lady Whistledown, Glaser said Nicola Coughlin's style for her main season involved changing her silhouette from the classic Regency style to a bit later in the period around 1820. He explained that her wardrobe change allows for viewers to see that she has taken control. of his life, no longer following the garish colors and costumes that his mother imposed on him in previous seasons.
