Pakistani scientists are awaiting approval to start clinical trials for treatments they claim can treat the coronavirus.

A research team from the Dow University of Medical Sciences, the country’s leading medical institution, designed intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) with plasma obtained from the blood of patients recovering from coronavirus, according to a statement.

“This is a very important achievement in the war against COVID-19,” Professor Shaukat Ali, head of the research team, told Anatolia.

Ali said this method of treatment is safe, low risk and very effective against coronaviruses.

He urged coronavirus patients who recovered to donate blood because their plasma was an important “raw material” for this treatment.

To date, more than 1,000 coronavirus patients have recovered from more than 5,000 reported cases in the country.

He added that this method is also a type of passive immunization.

Many countries around the world, including Turkey, France, and the United States, are conducting clinical trials of plasma therapy or blood transfusions to fight new viruses.

However, Pakistani doctors say the treatment they design is safer and more effective than plasma transfusions because it does not carry unwanted blood components such as plasma proteins, bacterial pathogens and potential viruses.

He said that this treatment has been used effectively worldwide to reduce the epidemics of other viruses such as coronavirus, SARS and Ebola.
