As the cyber war between China and the United States escalates, Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered what is being billed as the largest reorganization of the national army since 2015.

Seeking to expand its military capabilities, China terminated the Strategic Support Force and, in turn, created a new branch called Information Support Force. This gives China the ability to strengthen its capabilities in several areas, including cyber warfare, Xinhua News reported.

Importantly, Beijing's now-defunct Strategic Support Force was established more than eight years ago with the aim of improving capabilities in space, cyber, political and electronic warfare.

China is preparing

China's Defense Ministry said aerospace and cyber units previously under the Strategic Support Force will now be organizationally parallel to the newly established Information Support Force.

The aerospace unit is expected to improve China's ability to use space and step up space crisis management.

In announcing the new reorganization, Xi reiterated the Communist Party's leadership over the military. The Chinese president insisted that the new force provide key support to coordinate the construction and use of the cyber information system.

According to Xinhua, Li Wei, the political commissar of the now-defunct Strategic Support Force, will take on the same role within the Information Support Force.

Following the announcement, Li pledged to resolutely listen to Xi's instructions. Bi Yi, on the other hand, was named the new force's new commander.

The upheaval comes as China continues to clash with the United States in a struggle for global influence.in which cyberwarfare emerges as a key battlefield.

Last month, the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand accused China of sponsoring malicious cyber activity and attacking democratic institutions.
