Business leader urges PM Shehbaz to partner with Imran Khan

A prominent business leader in the country has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to extend an olive branch to his political rival, incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.

Khan, who remains behind bars, has been involved in a series of criminal cases, including charges under the Official Secrets Act, terrorism and corruption.

The former prime minister was removed from power by an opposition motion of no confidence in April 2022. However, the PTI alleged that Khan's ouster was orchestrated by the United States, supporting the motion of the opposition.

Khan was arrested in August last year after being convicted in the Toshakhana case. Subsequently, he was convicted in cases related to secret and un-Islamic marriages, with his appeals currently pending in the respective courts.

This development took place during the Prime Minister's day-long visit to Karachi, where he engaged with the business community, addressing their concerns and suggestions regarding trade and economy.

During a question-and-answer session, business tycoon Arif Habib praised Prime Minister Shehbaz's previous efforts to secure a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Habib suggested that the prime minister “reach out” to two entities, one being the neighboring country India and the other the incarcerated PTI founder, to ensure stability in the country.

Pakistan downgraded its relations with India, including suspending trade, after the Modi-led government unilaterally changed the special status of the occupied valley in August 2019, a move that Islamabad said hampered talks between the two nations.

Pakistan has linked normalization of ties with India with restoration of the special status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz reassured Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah of the full support of the federal government to resolve the issues raised by the provincial authorities.

“We will work together as brothers, as a team, for the betterment of the people of Pakistan,” the Prime Minister said during a meeting at the CM House.

The Prime Minister stressed that collaboration is essential to progress and prosperity and pledged not to compromise on this.

PM Shehbaz assured CM Murad that he was at his disposal whenever needed.

This assurance by the Prime Minister followed the provincial chief minister's expression of disappointment over the lack of federal support for the inclusion of Sindh in new development programs.

“For the last four years, the federation has neglected Sindh in its new projects,” the chief minister told PM Shehbaz during their meeting in Karachi today.

Various issues were discussed in the meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, held after he arrived in the port city for a day-long visit after being elected Prime Minister for the second time.
