#1 Women's Tennis wins nail-biter over #2 Misericordia in MAC Freedom title match
NOORDBERGEN, NJ (May 4, 2023) Junior Emma Eguia won the match-clinching point for the Ducks as the No. 1 Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team defeated No. 2 Misericordia 5-4 in the MAC Freedom finals Saturday afternoon.
Eguia was named MVP of the championship.
Stevens took home their third straight MAC Freedom championship with the victory. The Ducks have now defeated Misericordia in the last two finals, as they beat the Cougars 5-1 last year. The Ducks are now heading to the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row. Misericordia finishes the season 14-3.
Stevens trailed early in two games and was able to win two of three and take a 2-1 lead after a double play. Sophomore Stephanie Untermeyer and freshmen Alex Dry had the easier time on the front line as they secured an 8-4 victory. First year Julia Gomes and junior Isabella Woman scored a decisive comeback victory on the second line as the Ducks took the lead.
Singles didn't come so easily for the Ducks. Untermeyer and Gomez each won quickly in their respective matches, but the Cougars were able to win three of the other matches in straight sets as the match was then tied at four. Eguia, who had lost 6-0 in set one, stormed back to win the final two sets of her match 6-2, 6-1 to give Stevens the conference title.
