EC seeks response from Narendra Modi but also from Rahul and Kharge
The Election Commission of India (ECI), which continues to receive criticism for failing to act on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hate speech against Muslims during the election campaign in Rajasthan on April 21, is said to have taken cognizance today of violation of the model code of conduct.
The poll panel on Thursday wrote to BJP president JP Nadda over complaints against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over complaints against him and former party chief Rahul Gandhi.
The ECI has sought comments from Nadda and Kharge by 11 am on April 29.
This is an unprecedented decision. Previous notices of alleged MCC violations had been served directly to the affected candidate or star campaigner. Even during the ongoing campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, all MCC notices sent by the ECI were sent directly to party leaders, including BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, Congress leaders Randeep Surjewala and Supriya Shrinate, and to AAP leader Atishi.
The Commission's letter does not name the Prime Minister. The letter addressed to Nadda includes only the complaints filed by the Congress, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) against Prime Minister Modi's instances of hate speech.
The notice issued to Kharge includes complaints filed by the BJP, alleging that he and Rahul Gandhi violated the MCC. The saffron party claimed that during a speech in Kottayam on April 18, Gandhi made false allegations against the prime minister, saying he had advocated for one nation, one language and one religion.
The notice mentions that Kharge, in comments made to The Indian Express on the same day, said that President Droupadi Murmu was not invited to the Ram temple consecration ceremony because she was Dalit.
