Work begins on $10 million UAE-Indonesia mangrove research center to boost climate action
Work has started on a new mangrove research center in Indonesia, in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates.
Backed by a $10 million investment from the UAE, the Mohamed bin Zayed-Joko Widodo International Mangrove Research Center will be built on 2.5 hectares of land in Bali's Ngurah Rai Forest Park.
The park is already home to more than 1,158ha of mangroves and the creation of the research center was first announced at last year's Cop28 climate change conference in Dubai.
“The project reflects the UAE's commitment to protecting critical ecosystems, such as mangroves, and is in line with (the country's) efforts to mitigate climate change,” said Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, who attended an inauguration ceremony. event to the project.
“The center will provide an ideal platform for scientists and researchers to join forces and exchange knowledge to improve our ability to address current and future environmental challenges.
“It supports the UAE’s guidance, reflected in the Cop28 outcomes, to take collective climate action and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.”
The center will also conduct more research into the cultivation of mangroves, strengthening their role as natural carbon sinks, as well as their role in improving coastal habitats and promoting biodiversity.
With the ability to store carbon more than 400% faster than terrestrial tropical rainforests, mangroves absorb emissions and protect the coastal environment.
And about 80 percent of the world's fish populations depend on healthy mangrove ecosystems.
“The UAE recognizes that further loss of these forests exacerbates the effects of climate change, such as increased flooding and storms, and threatens populations living in coastal areas,” said Amna Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, who was also at the ceremony.
The UAE has also committed to planting 100 million mangroves by 2030.
