Delay in Iddat decision shatters PTI's hopes of Imran Khan's early release

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has slammed the delay in judgment in the illegal marriage case against the party's founder, saying Imran Khan will have to spend more time in jail.

PTI Information Secretary Raoof Hasan said state institutions were increasing pressure on state institutions in a bid to keep the party founder behind bars, although he was granted bail in several cases.

Pressure from the establishment on state institutions is mounting, he said at a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday.

He was reacting to the delay in announcing a reserved verdict in the iddat case against PTI founder and his wife Bushra Bibi by an Islamabad sessions court earlier today.

The Islamabad court had last week reserved its verdict on the appeals filed by the PTI founder and his wife against their conviction in the iddat case.

However, district and sessions judge Shahrukh Arjumand sought his recusal in the case, it would not be appropriate for him to announce the verdict due to Khawar Maneka's repeated expression of censure.

In today's press, the PTI spokesperson said he had witnessed court killings in the last two years and expressed fears that the former prime minister would have to spend more time in prison.

Khan, the ousted prime minister, has been behind bars since August last year after being convicted in the Toshakhana case.

Although the PTI founder was released on bail in this case, he remains incarcerated due to his conviction in other cases, including un-Islamic marriage and encryption.

He said the PTI founder should have been released from prison after his sentence in the Toshakhana case was suspended.

We fear that more cases will soon be filed against the PTI founder, the party spokesperson said, asserting that the cases against him over iddat and encryption were baseless.

Similarly, Hasan said PTI Vice President and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was incarcerated in other May 9-related cases while his release from prison was certain.

Hasan said the PTI was not in conflict with the army institute but with an individual. Pakistan is suffering because of the dictatorship of one individual.

Referring to the Hamoodur Rahman Commission report on the fall of Dhaka in 1971, the PTI spokesperson said the report did not contain anything against the army.

He said General Yahya Khan, the then military ruler, had put the state at stake to prolong his rule. Similarly, today, a person has put the state in difficulty to stay in power, the spokesperson added.
