Jeremy Corbyn would have made a better prime minister than Boris Johnson, Keir Starmer has said.

The Labor leader was asked whether he really believed his predecessor would have made a “great” prime minister in an election.

This came after he repeatedly refused to stand by the comment he made during the 2019 election campaign.

Speaking at a special leaders' session at Question Time, he said: “[Corbyn] would be a better prime minister.

“Look what we got, Boris Johnson, a man who made huge promises, broke them, and then had to leave Parliament in disgrace.”

Starmer evades questions about his support for Corbyn eight times

In recent weeks, Sir Keir has sought to distance himself from Mr Corbyn.

He criticized the Conservatives' election offer, calling it a “Jeremy Corbyn-style manifesto” that would “throw everything in the wheelbarrow” without explaining how to pay for it.

Asked about his remarks, Sir Keir said: “In 2019 I campaigned for the Labor Party as I have always campaigned for the Labor Party.”

He added that it subsequently became clear that the electorate “thought it was too much and wanted to see something that was fully costed and fully funded”.

Mr Corbyn accused his successor of trying to rewrite history with his recent comments.

The now independent candidate for Islington North said Sir Keir had shown “double standards” in expressing that view now, but not while serving in Mr Corbyn’s shadow cabinet.
