Rajya Sabha Chairman Deletes Kharges' Remarks From PM Modi's Election Speeches

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on July 1 criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his election speeches and also attacked the functioning of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Indian Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar deleted most of the remarks made against the RSS and Mr Modi.

Terming the RSS as an organization committed to working for the nation, Mr. Dhankhar asked: Is it a crime to be a member of an organization?

You say that a particular person is a member of the RSS. Is this in itself a crime? The RSS is an organization working for the nation. They have a lot of smart people, Mr. Dhankhar said.

You are criticizing an organization that works tirelessly for the nation, he added.

Mr Kharge was interrupted several times by the Treasury benches during his 90-minute speech on the motion of thanks to the President's address.

Mr. Kharge attacked the government for its failure to resolve the ethnic conflict in Manipur and criticized the Prime Minister for not visiting the state even once, although he had time to visit 14 countries foreigners during the past year.

The Congress leader demanded a caste census, a probe into the issue of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and called for withdrawal of the Agnipath scheme.

Mr Kharge referred to Mr Modi’s remarks ahead of the 2024 general elections, presenting data on the number of times he had referred to Muslims and Pakistan. Mr Dhankhar asked him to authenticate his claims and refused to accept the newspaper clippings that the Congress leader showed to support his remarks.

Mr. Kharge was supported by his party colleague and former finance minister P. Chidambaram, who asked how an opposition MP could authenticate the Prime Minister's remarks other than by quoting information.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi nodded, banging on her desk.

The chairman, however, did not accept the arguments and erased the remarks made by Mr. Kharge from the minutes.

The opposition leader insisted that he was only trying to highlight the controversial nature of the speeches made by the prime minister. He also said that no other prime minister before Mr Modi had ever made such comments.

Mr. Kharge cited a remark by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Manipur, but that too was deleted, with Mr. Dhankar saying the Congress leader was contradicting himself.

Leader of the House and BJP president JP Nadda also objected saying that the remarks made by Mr. Kharge against the RSS were unfortunate.

The Congress leader also raised the issue of shifting statues of eminent personalities, including Mahatma Gandhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji, from the Parliament premises.
