Russia is looking forward to a high-profile and comprehensive visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he prepares for summit talks with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, a trip the Kremlin suggests the West is eyeing with jealousy.
Indian Prime Minister Modi will travel to Moscow on July 8-9, accepting an invitation from President Putin to attend the 22nd annual India-Russia summit. This will be his first visit to Russia since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
During the summit, the leaders will review the breadth of India-Russia relations and discuss pressing regional and global issues, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi confirmed.
In Moscow, Prime Minister Modi's schedule is expected to be busy, offering opportunities for both formal and informal dialogues. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with VGTRK TV channel on Saturday that the leaders expected in-depth discussions, stressing the importance of their informal exchanges.
“It is obvious that the agenda will be very busy, if not overloaded. It will be an official visit and we hope that the leaders will also be able to talk informally,” Peskov said.
Peskov also highlighted the deep strategic partnership between India and Russia, mentioning individual and delegation-level talks planned in the Kremlin.
“We are expecting a very important and comprehensive visit, which is so crucial for Russian-Indian relations,” he said, as reported by the Tass news agency.
Moreover, Peskov said that the West's keen interest in Prime Minister Modi's visit underlines its importance.
“They are jealous, which means they are following the situation closely. This close monitoring means that they attach great importance to it. And they are not mistaken, there is reason to attach great importance to it,” Peskov explained, referring to Western attitudes towards the upcoming visit.
Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Prime Minister Modi has maintained communication with President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, advocating for a resolution to the war and highlighting its impact on the global economy.
India's stance reflects its long-standing relationship with Russia, as it has not condemned Moscow's actions and advocates a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. In addition, Indian purchases of discounted Russian crude have increased, despite the G7 price cap and growing concern in Western capitals.
The visit, Prime Minister Modi's first to Russia in nearly five years, follows his 2019 trip to Vladivostok for an economic forum.
Historically, the annual summit, which alternates between India and Russia, serves as the culmination of dialogue in their strategic partnership, with the previous meeting taking place on December 6, 2021 in New Delhi during President Putin's visit.
