Imran Khan and wife Bushra Bibi serving jail term in VIP style, says provincial minister

Lahore: Azma Bokhari, Minister for Information in the provincial government of Pakistan's Punjab, on Tuesday slammed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Provincial Information Advisor Barrister Saif for making “false allegations and accusations” against the Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

Saif had recently alleged that Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan – who is currently serving a sentence in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi – was being harassed on the orders of the Punjab CM.

“Under Maryam's orders, Bushra Bibi is subjected to nightly searches, including invasive body inspections in front of cameras, which causes her mental distress. This mistreatment is part of attempts to break Imran Khan, but Bushra Bibi continues to stand firmly by his side,” said lawyer Saif.

Speaking to the media in Lahore, Azma Bokhari slammed Saif for creating sensationalism in order to stay in the news.

“It’s a ridiculous way to stay on top of the news. Lying and creating sensational information are Bushra Bibi's old hobbies. Bushra Bibi can eat eggs, chicken or chicken broth, Maryam Nawaz doesn't care. Maryam Nawaz doesn't even know which cell Bushra Bibi is in at Adiala Prison. Just like her husband Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi has been provided with Class B facilities in prison,” Bokhari remarked.

She claimed that Maryam Nawaz faced worse circumstances during Imran Khan's rule.

“Husband and wife are serving their prison sentences in VIP style. Bushra Bibi is in prison for stealing gifts from Toshakhana and for his involvement in the embezzlement of £190 million. The privileges Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan enjoy in prison are unimaginable for an ordinary citizen,” Bokhari said.

The minister also slammed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party for playing the 'woman card' and trying to create a false narrative based on lies.

“Maryam Nawaz endured harsh conditions in Kot Lakhpat prison in Lahore and in NAB (National Accountability Bureau) detention centers, and these ordeals were imposed on her at the request of Bushra Bibi. Maryam Nawaz faced the harshness of prison but never played the woman card,” she said.
