Conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signed the controversial agreement in November with her Albanian counterpart Edi Rama.

The five-year agreement, estimated at 160 million euros per year, provides that male asylum seekers intercepted by the Italian navy or coast guard vessels in international waters – but within the Italian search and search zone rescue – are detained in Albania.
