PM Modi's Russia visit: PM returns to India after attending 16th BRICS summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned home on Wednesday after concluding his “impactful” two-day visit to Russia where he attended the 16th BRICS summit and held bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan, Russia on Tuesday for the BRICS summit, where he was warmly welcomed by Tatarstan leader Rustam Minnikhanov.
During his speech on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India's commitment to dialogue and diplomacy, advocating for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
He highlighted several pressing global challenges, including wars, economic uncertainty, climate change and terrorism, saying BRICS can play a crucial role in guiding the world towards stability.
Prime Minister Modi called for “resolute” focus and “firm support” in the fight against terrorism, stressing that there is no room for “double standards” in dealing with this question. He called for proactive measures to prevent the radicalization of young people.
The summit was attended by leaders of BRICS countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On the sidelines, Prime Minister Modi held his first structured bilateral talks with Xi Jinping in five years, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) despite ongoing border disputes.
Prime Minister Modi reflected on recent green initiatives undertaken by India, including the International Solar Alliance, the Disaster Resilient Infrastructure Coalition, Mission LIFE and the green credit initiatives announced at COP28. He invited BRICS countries to join these initiatives.
He also participated in separate meetings with Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The BRICS, comprising India, Russia, China, South Africa and Brazil, account for 24% of global GDP and 41% of the world's population. The group positions itself as an economic counterweight to Western influence, with recent additions including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
