Brazilian Lula plans state visit for Chinese Xi and talks in Amazon with American Biden
Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva plans several engagements with his Chinese and American counterparts, built around their trips to the South American country, including one to the Amazon for the Group of 20 summit in Rio de Janeiro next month .
US President Joe Biden will attend the multilateral summit in Rio de Janeiro in person, a senior White House official said on Wednesday, while a Brazilian government official confirmed that Lula would host Chinese President Xi Jinping for a visit. Official status immediately after the G20.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Washington-based Brookings Institution think tank, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that during his trip, Biden plans to expand discussions on the Partnership for workers' rights.
This initiative was launched with Lula on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly last year and focuses on combating forced labor, promoting investment standards that support decent jobs, empowering workers and the elimination of discrimination in the workplace.
Lula and Biden, Sullivan said, will seek to expand that to include other countries.
The White House official also stressed that U.S. participation in this year's G20 summit would focus on launching an effort calling on international financial institutions and major private sector creditors to step up relief for countries facing a heavy debt burden.
