Yoon Suk Yeol impeached and South Korean PM named interim president
tirto.id – South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol was officially impeached on Saturday (14/12/2024) after the opposition-controlled parliament held a second vote. The impeachment was triggered by Yoon's attempt last week to implement martial law, a controversial measure that shocked public opinion and sparked divisions within his party.
According to the constitution, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, appointed by Yoon, will serve as interim president. Meanwhile, Yoon remains in office, but his presidential powers are suspended. Han said he would do everything possible to maintain stability after Yoon's impeachment.

Yoon is the second consecutive conservative president to be impeached in South Korea, following Park Geun-hye's impeachment in 2017. Previously, Yoon survived the first impeachment vote held over the weekend, when his party largely boycotted parliament and had failed. .reach quorum.
Supporters of Yoon's impeachment cheered near Parliament when the news was announced, waving colorful LED sticks to the music. In contrast, demonstrations by Yoon's supporters immediately dispersed after the news broke.
Yoon's impeachment proposal was approved after at least 12 members of the People Power Party, the party that supports Yoon, joined the opposition which controls 192 seats in the 300-member parliament, reaching the two-thirds threshold necessary to pass impeachment.
The number of parliamentarians in favor of impeachment was 204, 85 opposed it, three abstained and eight ballots were invalid.
The Constitutional Court will determine whether Yoon is removed from office within six months. If he is removed from office, early elections will be held.
