A car was flipped over in Scotts Valley due to a tornado that touched down Saturday afternoon

At least four people were injured after a tornado struck Northern California Saturday afternoon, according to local authorities.

The tornado flipped several cars and downed power lines in Scotts Valley, located about 55 miles (89 kilometers) south of San Francisco, police said.

The tornado was rated an EF1, one of the weakest classifications, and lasted about five minutes, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

Earlier Saturday, a hurricane warning was issued for San Francisco residents for the first time ever, as thunderstorms swept through the area.

Police said the tornado hit Scotts Valley at 13:39 local time (21:39 GMT) on Saturday.

The local fire service said at least four people were injured, and at least two of them were taken to hospital, CBS News, the BBC's partner in the US, reported.

Police closed the road overnight to allow repair work to be carried out and the debris to be removed.

Wind speeds are expected to peak at about 90 mph (145 km/h), the National Weather Service said.

The weather agency also said the tornado was about 30 yards (27 m) wide and traveled a quarter-mile (400 m) before calming down.

Earlier on Saturday, a hurricane warning was issued for San Francisco residents just before 06:00 local time (14:00 GMT).

The warning was for parts of downtown San Francisco and northern San Mateo County.

More than a million residents in San Francisco and its suburbs woke up to alerts on their cell phones warning them to “take shelter now.”

The weather service said winds of up to 60 mph (96 km/h) swept through the area.

But a few minutes later, the NWS Bay Area said the warning had ended and the storm had moved out of downtown.

The city last saw a tornado in 2005, though it struck without any clear radar signal, so no warning was issued in that case, NWS meteorologist Roger Glass told the AP news agency.

A tornado warning was last issued for nearby San Mateo County in 2011.

The warning came after a strong storm passed overnight, uprooting trees and causing major power outages.

As of Sunday, more than 50,000 customers remain without power along California's northern and central coast, according to PowerOutage.

The NWS Bay District has warned residents to stay away from the seashore over the weekend, with a coastal flood warning issued until Monday.

The tornado warning for San Francisco came just one week after the city was warned of a tsunami for the first time ever.

The brief warning was issued for Northern California and Southern Oregon following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the state's northern coast.

This was later cancelled, and no injuries were reported.
