US Homeland Security Secretary Asks Migrants to Apply for Permanent Status or Leave | Trump administration

Migrants in the United States with temporary protected status should apply for permanent residency or leave, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said following last week’s Supreme Court ruling that stripped humanitarian protection from hundreds of thousands of immigrants.

The remarks on CNN’s State of the Union follow a decision that could allow Donald Trump’s administration to expel Haitian and Syrian immigrants to home countries plagued by conflict and poverty.

“Either try to complete the paperwork and be here on permanent status, or we will help you get back to your country,” Mullin said.

“We will actually give you a plane ticket, plus about $2,100 to help you get settled once you get there, but temporary protected status, according to the courts and in the name itself, is not a permanent status,” he added.

Federal law authorizes “the Administration to grant temporary legal residence in the United States to persons fleeing war, disaster, or other conditions.”

The status had previously been renewed successively and, despite the decision to end these protections, the State Department currently warns against travel to Haiti or Syria, citing widespread violence, crime, terrorism and kidnapping.

The United States first granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitians after a devastating earthquake in 2010, and to Syrians after their country descended into civil war in 2012.

Thursday’s Supreme Court decision is expected to affect approximately 350,000 Haitian and 6,000 Syrian immigrants who now face detention or deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as protections end.

Haitian TPS holders and advocates widely condemned the move, warning that it would disrupt the lives of thousands of people who have lived and worked in the United States for decades.

Haitian residents of Springfield, Ohio, have expressed despair over the coming effects of ending TPS protections. During the 2024 election, Trump falsely accused Haitians living in the city of eating other people’s pets. The repeated insults led to bomb threats as well as white supremacist marches in the city.

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority, however, found that Haitians suing the administration were unlikely to succeed in their argument that the administration’s actions were racist.

“For Springfield, it’s going to hurt. When I arrived here, this neighborhood was dead. In this square, there are 1782740043 seven Haitian companies,” Franky Pierre told the Guardian on Thursday after the ruling. Pierre is a Haitian immigrant who came to the United States with his family during the 1991 military coup to overthrow then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Pierre added: “All these people are going to have to run away or go somewhere, which I’m pretty sure is going to start tonight,” referring to TPS holders.

Republicans also criticized the Supreme Court’s decision. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called Thursday’s decision a “mistake.” “The situation in Haiti could hardly be worse. Violent gangs run most of the country. The government barely functions,” DeWine said in a statement Thursday. “And the economy is in ruins.”

Other Republican congressmen, including Mike Lawler of New York and Don Bacon of Nebraska, criticized Thursday’s decision and advocated for an extension of TPS for Haitian immigrants.

In total, 1.7 million people from 17 countries benefit from temporary protection status. Immigration advocates fear the Trump administration will target TPS at other immigrants, effectively ending the 1990 program.
