Good evening. What is the most interesting multinational company in the world today? Our cover story this week makes the case for Volkswagen doubling down on China just when most other foreign automakers are cutting their losses. Only time will tell whether the automaker's China strategy will succeed, but in the meantime, it's certainly fun to follow its maverick approach.
Elsewhere, we have infographics on Chinese automakers still hoping to enter U.S. markets; an interview with Shirley Kan on 45 years of the Taiwan Relations Act; a report on the industrial robot revolution in China; and an op-ed by Noah Barkin on Angela Merkel's blind spot on China. Last multinational standing?
VW has invested more than $13 billion in China over the past six years. This is four times more than the Japanese Toyota and eleven times more than the American GM. But with China losing market share, EU tariffs eating away at its Chinese production base, and Chinese competitors nipping at its heels at home, the question Volkswagen faces is increasingly existential. . : Can the German car manufacturer survive in China while continuing to prosper at home? Luke Patey reports.
The big picture: Could Chinese cars still enter the US?
Some Chinese automakers still hope to enter the U.S. market, despite proposed restrictions that are seen as a fatal blow to their global ambitions. Noah Berman reports.
A Q&A session with Shirley Kan
Shirley Kan is an independent analyst and former Asia specialist at the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. She is an expert on the Taiwan Relations Act, which has been the cornerstone of U.S.-Taiwan relations for 45 years. Congress passed the law in April 1979, four months after President Jimmy Carter transferred U.S. diplomatic recognition to the People's Republic of China, instead of the Republic of China, commonly known as Taiwan. Since then, the law has been a touchstone for every president. In this week's interview with Noah Berman, she talks about growing fears that China may try to take Taiwan by force; what the Taiwan Relations Act actually requires of the United States; and whether it is still enough to maintain peace in East Asia.

Angela Merkels: China's blind spot
The former German chancellor sought ever closer economic ties between Germany, the EU and China during his tenure. But in his new memoir, Noah Barkin says she glosses over many uncomfortable truths about the consequences of her approach.
