Donald Trump is “smarter” than all his detractorsFormer Obama advisor
Van Jones, a former adviser to former President Barack Obama and current CNN political commentator, said Friday that President-elect Donald Trump is “smarter” than all of his critics.
In a video posted Friday to political commentator Chris Cillizza's YouTube channel, he asked Jones, “How the hell did Donald Trump figure out that the mainstream media was fringe and the fringe was now mainstream?”
Trump's election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris is partly attributed to the rise of non-traditional right-wing media. “The burgeoning right-wing influencer ecosystem helped re-elect Donald Trump,” The Atlantic’s Spencer Kornhaber wrote in an article published two days after the election titled “Why Democrats Are Losing the Culture War.”
The president-elect's nearly three-hour interview with podcaster Joe Rogan in late October comes to mind when thinking about his use of alternative media channels. Rogan, whose podcast The Joe Rogan Experience attracts millions of listeners, later endorsed Trump on the eve of Election Day. Harris, while doing her own media blitz during the election with traditional and non-traditional media outlets, did not appear on Rogan's podcast.
“I mean the problem is you have a framework in mind: 'How can Donald Trump do it? How can Donald Trump do it? How can Donald Trump do it?' Guys, can we stop? Donald Trump is not an idiot. Let me be very clear. Donald Trump is smarter than me, you and all his critics. , the Supreme Court, the popular vote,” Jones, who worked under the Obama administration as a green jobs adviser before resigning in 2009, told Cillizza.
The GOP took control of the Senate, with 53 Republicans to 47 Democrats, and the House with 220 Republicans and 215 Democrats in this year's elections. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Trump received 2.4 million more votes than Harris (77,168,458 to 74,749,891). Percentage-wise, Trump received 49.9 percent of the popular vote, compared to Harris' 48.3 percent. Meanwhile, during his first term, Trump appointed three conservative-leaning Supreme Court justices, tilting the Court in his party's favor.
“[Trump] He has a huge media ecosystem bigger than the mainstream built around him and for him, as well as religious fervor in a political movement around him. And his best friend is the richest person in the history of the world, and the most important Kennedy is with him,” Jones said Friday.
The former adviser was referring to tech billionaire Elon Musk, whom Trump chose to lead his proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) along with biotech entrepreneur and former 2024 Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a former independent 2024 presidential candidate whom Trump chose to be the new secretary of Health and Human Services,
“This guy is a phenomenon. He's the most powerful human on earth and in our lifetime. And we always say, 'Well, how's this guy?' To ordinary people we look like idiots,” Jones said.
Newsweek reached out to the Trump transition team by email for comment Sunday afternoon.
This week, Trump was announced as “Person of the Year” by Time magazine. In a recent interview for the annual issue, Trump was asked whether Harris made any tactical errors that cost him the election.
He responded, “I think when she wasn't talking to anyone, it put the spotlight on her. In other words, if she had gone out and just done interviews…And people said, ' Is there something wrong with her?' Why would they? I mean, I'm doing this interview with you. I've done interviews with, if I had time, anyone who asked, I think the Joe Rogan interview, you know, happened. for almost three and a half hours.
