Wooden bridge opens in Amtali to facilitate communication

AMTALI, BARGUNA, Dec 15: A wooden bridge next to a broken iron bridge of Holdia Haat Bazar in Amtali Upazila of the district has been opened for ease of public communication.

This bridge was inaugurated on Saturday by Amtali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Ashraful Alam as the chief guest.

The opening ceremony was presided over by social activist Alhajj Md Nannu Molla.

Officer-in-charge of Amtali Police Station Md Ariful Islam was present as a special guest while the keynote speaker was Upazila BNP co-convener Md Mokbul Hossain Khan, initiator of the bridge wooden.

Among others, Poura BNP member secretary Jalal Ahmed Khan, Poura BNP chief Milton Biswas, Upazila Juba Dal co-convener Mehedi Zaman Rakib, Upazila Chhatra Dal member secretary Md Imran Khan and senior figures The Chawra Union elite were present at the ceremony.

On June 22, a passenger on a microbus fell into the canal, breaking the iron bridge, killing nine people. Along this broken bridge, 300 feet long and 6 feet wide, a wooden bridge was raised.

Upazila Chhatra Dal member secretary Md Imran Khan said the collapse of the iron bridge caused communication disruption for 50,000 people of Holdia and Chawra unions. There was no end to public suffering and the iron bridge was the only means of communication with the Upazila Parishad, government offices and the court, he added.

He added: “Now students, adults, elderly people, children and women can reach the city via the wooden bridge.”

Upazila BNP co-convener Md Mokbul Hossain Khan said, “Considering the sufferings of the public, we all built the wooden bridge.”

While presiding over the inaugural programme, Md Nannu Molla said, “It is possible to do any impossible work with people. This wooden bridge is an example.”
