Xi visits Macau casino hub to mark 25 years since his return to Chinese rule
MACAU Chinese President Xi Jinping began a three-day visit to Macau on Wednesday to mark the 25th anniversary of the casino city's return to Chinese rule.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were welcomed at the airport in a lavish ceremony complete with lion and dragon dances. Xi told reporters that Macau, a former Portuguese colony of 687,000 people, is the pearl in the motherland's palm tree.
I believe that as long as we fully exploit the institutional advantages of one country and two systems, dare to work hard and have the courage to innovate, Macao will definitely create an even better future, he said.
Like neighboring financial hub Hong Kong, Beijing has governed Macau under the one-country, two-systems principle that allows cities to maintain their own Western-style legal and economic systems. Macau is the only city in China where casino gambling is legal.
Since Portugal's handover to China in 1999, Macau has transformed from a monopolized casino hub to the world's largest gambling hub, flooded with tourists mainly from mainland China.
Over the years, violence linked to organized crime has been brought to heel. Older residents generally believe their fortunes have improved under Chinese rule, pointing to better welfare and annual cash allowances backed by huge gaming tax reserves.
Following huge anti-government protests in 2019 in neighboring Hong Kong, authorities further tightened their control in the city, where political activism already did not pose the same threat to Beijing.
A vigil commemorating the bloody 1989 military crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square has been banned. Pro-democracy figures were barred from participating in the 2021 legislative elections. Last year, the city strengthened its national security law and vocal political dissidents were largely silenced.
Chinese leaders are more concerned about diversifying Macau's economy, which relies heavily on the gaming and tourism sectors.
Its new leader, Sam Hou Fai, who was elected by about 400 Beijing supporters to Macau's election committee in October, said economic diversification was a key issue. The former top judge promised to accelerate plans to boost tourism and other sectors such as traditional medicine, finance, technology, exhibitions and trade.
However, the city remains dependent on the gaming industry for revenue to support social programs and other goals set by Beijing, analysts say.
Xi will attend the inauguration ceremony of the new government on Friday and is expected to outline his expectations for the city.
China has helped promote Macau's development by designating a special zone on neighboring Hengqin Island in the city of Zhuhai that authorities from Macau and mainland China will jointly manage.
Security was tightened during Xi's visit, including a ban on flying drones between December 14 and 22.
