Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a member of the government committee, said on Monday that he had “accepted the request of the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) negotiating team to meet its jailed party founder, Imran Khan, after the latter been invited to present a “charter of demands”. “.

The PTI and the government finally launched the much-awaited negotiation process in Parliament in Islamabad today, with “hope of a positive outcome” in a bid to ease the country's political tensions.

Irfan, speaking on Geo News show 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath', said people want peace and democratic norms rather than anarchy and economic instability in the country.

Highlighting the postponement of the verdict in the Al-Qadir Trust case against the PTI founder and his wife, worth 190 million euros, he clarified that the government has nothing to do with the legal matters , excluding any link with the current negotiation process.

He added that January 2 has been set for the continuation of negotiations with consultation of the two commissions, which will not be the final meeting.

The senator stressed that both sides agreed to resolve the issue behind closed doors and refrain from affecting the dialogue through statements or speeches.

“We want a logical conclusion to the negotiations. We told them [PTI] to present their demand in the form of a charter of demands,” he added.

Asked about the potential results, Irfan said that at this stage the government could not give any guarantees to the opposition.

He, however, said the government committee “composed of senior members with knowledge of constitutional and legal issues” would examine options after receiving requests from the former ruling party.

Irfan was of the view that the PTI negotiating committee apparently had the mandate of the former prime minister.

“The PTI team expressed the desire to hold a meeting with its founder, which we agreed to. We also want contact between the PTI team and Imran,” he added.

MWM chief sees 'a lot of positive things'

Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) chief senator Raja Nasir Abbas, speaking on the same show, said he witnessed “a lot of positive things” in the meeting called by the ruling government.

He said the PTI founder had proved his patriotic approach by forming a negotiation committee and blamed the government for delay in constituting its dialogue committee.

He stressed that there was a need to hold a meeting between the PTI committee and Imran which would demonstrate a positive approach on the part of the government.

The MWM leader also urged the government to take advantage of the ongoing dialogue process to resolve political differences.

The federal government and the party founded by Imran Khan conducted their high-profile meeting in a conducive environment and decided to continue the dialogue process.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Advisor to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan leader ( MQM-P) Farooq Sattar.

The main opposition party, meanwhile, was represented by former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Allama Raja Nasir Abbas .

Other party committee members who could not attend the meeting include Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, PTI General Secretary Salman Akram Raja, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur and senior PTI leader Hamid Khan.

The PTI will present its demands in writing to the government negotiating committee in the next meeting after the end of the first round of negotiations in a favorable environment.
