Imran Khan: the Punch-Out series is effectively dead at least at Next Level Games

Kinda Funny Games presenter Imran Khan said on gaming forum Reset Era that the Punch-Out series is effectively a dead franchise at Nintendo. Khan said he spoke to someone a while ago who was involved with Next Level Games' latest Punch-Out game and asked them about a new game. The person he spoke to said stated that the negative character reactions that followed the release of the Wii version, combined with the overall sales of the series, simply buried the games. However, he says another studio could still work on the Punch-Out franchise in the future.

“I met someone from, say, a studio near Punch-Out, got drunk in a bar once and asked about a new one. The story I was told, and keep in mind this could just be one person's and no one's point of view. Otherwise, there was a lot more backlash against the characters in the Wii game than expected. And this team spent a lot of time assuring Nintendo that they weren't relying on bad stereotypes that would be exposed this time around, so everyone just frowned and said it was done. Especially since the other games from this team had much higher sales potential.
