Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi sign power of attorney for £190m appeal

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi on Monday signed a power of attorney while in the prison courtroom to appeal to the High Court of Islamabad against the verdict in the 190 million pound corruption case. , reported television channel 24NewsHd.

The accountability court sentenced former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and his wife Bushra Bibi to seven years in prison after finding them guilty in the Al-Qadir Trust case , worth £190 million.

Delivering the verdict in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, AC judge Nasir Javed Rana also imposed a fine of one million rupees on Imran Khan and half a million rupees on Bushra Bibi. In case of non-payment of fines, the convicts will spend an additional six and three months in prison respectively.

Shortly after the verdict was announced, Bushra Bibi was arrested from inside the courtroom.

The court noted that Bushra Bibi sided with her husband in his “illegal activities,” ordering the federal government to take control of Al-Qadir University and confiscate his land.

As per the court's short order, Imran Khan Khan was booked for “corrupt practices” and “abuse of authority”, while Bushra was booked for “involvement in illegal activities”.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were present in the courtroom. Also present were advocate Gohar Ali Khan, Shoaib Shaheen, Salman Akram Raja and other lawyers.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team, led by Attorney General Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi, was also present in the courtroom of Adiala jail.

According to the verdict, the assets of the “fictitious trust 'Al-Qadir University Project Trust' are forfeited to the Federal Government within the meaning of Section 10(a) of the National Accountability Ordinance of 1999.”

“The two convicts are present in court, they will be placed in detention in this case and handed over to the superintendent's prison with the committal warrant to serve the sentences thus imposed,” adds the text.

The court convicted Imran under section 9(a)(ii)(iv)(vi) of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999, for corruption and corrupt practices. Meanwhile, Bushra was convicted under Section 9(a)(xii) of the same order for “aiding, assisting and abetting” corruption and corrupt practices.

The 148-page verdict mentions that Bushra's role was limited to aiding and abetting corruption crimes, which was considered a mitigating factor in his conviction.

He added that the prosecution's case was based on documentary evidence, found to be credible and consistent, while the defense had been unable to discredit the prosecution witnesses or create reasonable doubt in the case.

Both the accused had filed applications for acquittal under Section 265-K of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which were rejected by the court.

The court concluded that the prosecution had succeeded in proving its case “beyond a shadow of doubt” and the convictions were upheld.

Imran Khan and his wife were charged in this case on February 27, 2024, shortly after the general elections.

NAB Corruption Reference

The £190 million case involved a reference filed by the NAB against Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and others in December 2023.

The case centered on an alleged settlement between the PTI government and a real estate tycoon, which allegedly caused a loss of 190 million pounds to Pakistan's national exchequer.

Imran Khan and the other defendants allegedly misused the £190 million sent by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) as part of the settlement. Bushra Bibi was named as a defendant for her role as administrator of the Al-Qadir Trust.

Additionally, the couple was accused of receiving undue benefits, including over 458 kanals of land in Mauza Bakrala, Sohawa, for the establishment of Al-Qadir University.

During Imran Khan's tenure, the NCA seized £190 million of the tycoon's assets. The assets were supposed to be handed over to Pakistan, with the settlement considered a civil matter by the NCA.
