China has increased its efforts to help Myanmar in its rescue and rescue operations, sending supplies and rescue teams in affected areas in the event of a disaster, after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Southeast Asian country on Friday, followed by several replicas.

Prime Minister Li Qiang also exercised his condolences on Saturday in Min Aung Hlaing on the earthquake.

Sunday at noon, the number of deaths in Myanmar had climbed to around 1,700, with 3,400 other injured and 300 disappeared, according to the country's state board.

The regions most seriously struck by the earthquake and its replicas, including the second city of Myanmar, Mandalay, and the country's capital, not Pyi Daw, have experienced generalized damage to infrastructure, with hundreds of buildings reduced in rubble, according to reports.

At 7:38 p.m. on Sunday, an international research and rescue team in China, including 118 people and six rescue dogs, left Beijing for Nay Pyi Daw to help rescue efforts in the event of a disaster, according to the Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management.

The team, equipped with two rescue vehicles and 634 rescue equipment, as well as medical supplies, should go to other areas struck by the Nay Pyi Daw earthquake.

On Saturday morning, a rescue and medical team of 37 members of the Chinese province of Yunnan, which borders Myanmar and was also struck by the earthquake, arrived in Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, with emergency rescue equipment. It was the first international team to reach Myanmar.

The team went to Nay Pyi Daw, where she joined rescue operations alongside local emergency workers at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday. After night efforts, at 5 a.m. on Sunday, the team saved an elderly man who was trapped under the rubble of a local hospital for almost 40 hours.

Several other groups of China, including a national team of 82 members, three civil teams and a team from the Croix-Rouge de China company, joined myanmar research and rescue operations this weekend.

On Sunday afternoon, the Yunnan sent about 7.3 metric tonnes of daily necessities and rescue supplies, including instant noodles, clothing, medicines and tents, which were transported by the provincial capital of Kunming in Yanging.

Li Ming, spokesperson for China International Development Cooperation Agency, said on Saturday that the Chinese government had promised 100 million yuan ($ 13.77 million) of emergency humanitarian aid to support rescue efforts for earthquakes on demand from the Myanmar government.

China will provide urgent supplies, including tents, blankets, first aid kits, food and drinking water, which were to deliver on Monday. Additional aid will be provided on the basis of the needs of Myanmar, added Li.

Meanwhile, an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 struck the Tonga, an island nation in the Southwest Pacific Ocean, at 1:18 am on Monday at local time, according to China Earthquake Networks Center.
