On the left, Governor Bill Walker shakes hands with Communist President Xi Jinping to obtain an agreement to work together on gas in Alaska. On the right, Governor Mike Dunleavy squeezes the hands of Taiwan free to recognize the intention to buy Alaska natural gas from a private -based gas in Alaska.

It has been seven years since the governor of Alaska Bill Walker and entities belonging to the Communist Chinese government signed a preliminary agreement granting extraordinary control over the planned project in Alaska for Chinese companies, notably Sinopec, the Bank of China and China Investment Corporation, all owned by the Communist government.

Under the agreement, Sinopec, an oil and gas state company, would serve as a principal buyer, committing to buy up to 75% of the Alaska natural gas from the AKLNG project. The company is also responsible for engineering and gas construction.

The Bank of China, also belonging to the government, would act as the main lender, putting in Alaska in matters of financial dependence on China.

In addition, China Investment Corporation would participate in equity in the project, giving China a direct participation in the Alaska natural gas infrastructure. All of this was part of China’s international efforts to buy and control the infrastructure. His name is “the Belt and Road initiative”.

A widely disseminated photo of Governor Walker shaking the hand of Chinese President Xi Jinping highlights the relationship with the walker cultivated with China. This nuptial parade began in April 2017, when President XI made a stopover in Anchorage. Walker, and the chief of the AGDC, Keith Meyer, then went to China later to negotiate the details more.

Governor Bill Walker signs an agreement with China in November 2017 to build the LNG project in Alaska.

After Mike Dunleavy was elected governor in 2018 – his victory due in part to the public's opposition to the Walkers agreements with China – he quickly canceled the agreement.

On July 19, 2019, Joe Dubler, acting president of Alaska Gasline Development Corporation after the departure of Keith Meyer, testified before the Alaska House resources committee that the joint development agreement had actually collapsed. The Dunleavy administration had informed the Chinese via the teleconference that Alaska would rather pursue partnerships with the producers of North Slope and other potential buyers.

Then, in 2022, Sinopec was struck off from the New York Stock Exchange.

Six years after its administration, Dunleavy embarked on a commercial mission in Asia to secure non -communist buyers for Alaskas Gas, notably avoiding China. He returned with at least one letter of intent to the president of the Taiwans, Lai Ching-te, expressing the interest of the taiwans to buy six million tonnes of LNG per year in Alaska and even invest in the project.

While the agreement with Taiwan is still non -binding, Alaska Gasline Development Corporation has in the process of obtaining a private developer from the private sector, Glenfarne Group, to direct the project. Similar to the Trans-Alaska pipeline system, which belongs to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, the Gasline project heads for a property model in the private sector, as before Walker took office in 2014 and begins to give the infrastructure of Alaska to the Communists.

When Governor Walker concluded his agreement with China, he only had a year left in his only mandate.

From now on, Governor Dunleavy has been less than two years old to finalize agreements with the main stakeholders, including manufacturers, buyers and financiers, to ensure that the gas line offers energy regions and international buyers from Alaskas in Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Japan and beyond. He spends a lot of time on this project to finalize it before leaving his duties.

The project has taken a new step on March 27, when the AGDC signed liaison and final agreements with Glenfarne Group, which will involve a participation of 75%, AGDC retaining 25%. Glenfarne is expected to make his final investment decision in the fourth quarter of 2025 after obtaining additional investors.

The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority approved a credit line of $ 50 million in December for frontal engineering and design work, which, according to Glenfarne, will cost around $ 150 million. In addition, federal loan guarantees of $ 30 billion can improve the financial viability of the project.

President Donald Trump expressed strong support for the project, issuing a decree on January 20, the day he was sworn in, prioritizing the initiative of Alaska LNG.
