Trump rejects Iran peace proposal as Tehran vows to confront its ‘enemies’

US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s counter-proposal to end the 10-week Middle East war, calling it “completely unacceptable”, while Tehran pledged to “never give in”, prolonging a standoff that has choked the Strait of Hormuz and roiled global energy markets.
“I just read the response from the so-called “representatives” of Iran. I don’t like it, TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” the president said in a Truth Social article on Sunday.
Iranian state media presented Tehran’s response as a rejection of the US proposal, which it called a “surrender” demand. In its response to the latest US proposal, Tehran insisted on war reparations, full sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, an end to sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian struck a defiant tone as negotiations continued on Sunday. “We will never bow our heads to the enemy, and if discussions about dialogue or negotiation arise, it does not mean capitulation or retreat,” he said on X in Persian, translated via Grok.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” said the war was not over because there was “still more work to do.” Iran has neither returned its enriched uranium nor dismantled its enrichment sites, and continues to support regional proxies and advance its ballistic missile program, he said.
Nuclear standoff and Hormuz
The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran had rejected US demands regarding its nuclear program and stockpiles of highly enriched uranium. Instead, Tehran proposed separate negotiations and offered to dilute some of its highly enriched uranium and transfer the rest to a third country, with a provision that that uranium would be returned if Washington pulled out of a possible deal, the Journal reported.
The United States wants assurances that Iran will end its nuclear program as part of any peace deal. Iran reportedly agreed to suspend uranium enrichment, but for a shorter period than the 20-year moratorium proposed by the United States, Iran refused to dismantle its nuclear facilities.
Tehran also demanded that the United States end its blockade of Iranian ports as a condition for opening the Strait of Hormuz.
A Qatari LNG tanker crossed the strait on Sunday for the first time since the start of the war, a passage reportedly approved by Iran to build confidence with Qatar and Pakistan, although the symbolic opening did little to allay broader market concerns.
US West Texas Intermediate futures with June delivery rose 3.08% to $95.42 a barrel on Monday, while international benchmark Brent crude futures with July delivery rose 3.16% to $104.49 a barrel.
Iran continued its drone attacks against its Gulf neighbors this weekend. The United Arab Emirates said it had intercepted two drones coming from Iran, Qatar condemned a drone attack that hit a cargo ship in its waters and Kuwait said its air defenses had encountered hostile drones entering its airspace.
In an interview with IRNA, Iranian military spokesman Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia warned of “surprising options” if adversaries made another “miscalculation,” saying any future aggression would bring conflict to areas “that the enemy has not anticipated.”
Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not appeared publicly since the start of the war, also issued “decisive new directives” for military operations, state television reported, without elaborating.
All eyes are on Beijing
The unresolved impasse looms over Trump’s upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week in Beijing, where the war in Iran is expected to take center stage.
Washington has sought to pressure Beijing to rely on Tehran to reopen the strait, although China’s willingness to act as a pressure mechanism remains unclear.
The base case, according to Ben Emons, managing director at Fed Watch Advisors, is a “managed easing with potentially slim results” – which probably amounts to vague common language about de-escalation and maintaining the oil flow.
China shares Washington’s interest in a stable Hormuz, Emons said, but cannot make concessions that jeopardize its partnership with Tehran or risk damaging its reputation if a mediation effort fails.
In a high-profile diplomatic overture, Beijing hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi last week, with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi reaffirming the “strategic partnership” between the two countries while urging Tehran to seek a diplomatic solution to the regional conflict and refrain from hostilities.
