ICC approves trial of pink ball switch in tests, light delays, news, video, explanation

Cricket’s governing body revealed on Monday it would test the use of pink balls in Test matches to maximize play in poor light.

The red balls commonly used in Tests are not easily visible in fading light, while white balls used in limited-overs matches are not found to be durable enough for the longer format.

Pink balls are already used in day-night tests played under lights. The International Cricket Council said in a statement that its board of directors had approved “testing the use of a pink ball in Test matches, with the prior consent of both teams, to maximize play in the event of expected poor lighting”.

The global cricket body said it had also approved new “research into lighting technology for match officials and venues to reduce lost play due to poor lighting”.

“Our discussions… have strengthened the ICC’s commitment to governance, administration and the growth of cricket worldwide,” council chairman Jay Shah said after a meeting in Ahmedabad, India.

Two years ago, more than half of the first day of England’s Test against Sri Lanka at The Oval was lost to bad light.

“You go to a pink ball and you move on,” former England captain Michael Vaughan said at the time.

“Teams will have to accept that they are unlucky. With all these ideas you are not going to please everyone. I just want to see them continue.”

Problems reared their heads again in January’s Ashes Test at the SCG, when only 45 overs were possible on day one due to poor lighting.

“There’s a big debate about lights about whether you can change the color of the ball at that moment to make sure we stay on,” Vaughan said.

“I have said for a long time that when the lights come on and the red ball is not visible, the players will not like that, but will have to turn to a pink ball during that period. We are playing a game with pink balls, so why not turn to a pink ball to ensure the players stay on the field?”
