Taiwan calls for speedy passage of defense bill ahead of possible Trump-Xi meeting

Taiwan’s presidential office on Thursday urged lawmakers to pass the Cabinet version of a special defense bill ahead of a possible Trump-Xi meeting, citing growing regional security concerns and public support for increased defense spending.

Presidential Office spokeswoman Karen Kuo said in an interview that joint military exercises by the United States, Japan and the Philippines, as well as continued defense strengthening by Tokyo and Manila, have focused international attention on whether Taiwan is showing sufficient resolve to strengthen its own defense.

Kuo said that nearly 70 percent of the Taiwanese public supports the adoption of defense-related budgets, urging parliament, regardless of political affiliation, to do everything possible to facilitate this process.

She added that the opposition’s proposals totaling NT$380 billion ($12 billion) or NT$800 billion ($25.4 billion) exclude key elements such as drone development and domestic defense industry supply chains. The administration instead supports the Cabinet’s eight-year plan, totaling NT$1.25 trillion (US$39.6 billion).

Kuo insisted: “Strengthening national defense should be passed by Parliament as soon as possible. It should not be divided between the KMT and the DPP; everyone should work together to make strengthening national defense a common goal that we aspire to and can successfully achieve. Before the Trump-Xi meeting, we hope that our special national defense bill can be passed smoothly.”

Meanwhile, she regretted that attorney general candidate Hsu Hsi-hsiang failed to gain legislative approval, calling him an “exceptional talent” with experience in national security and law enforcement. President Lai Ching-te will take follow-up actions after receiving relevant documents, Kuo said.
