Pregnancy and postpartum mental health: why support is important

Anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges are common during pregnancy and postpartum, but many families still struggle in silence due to shame, stigma, or fear of judgement.
Myth: If someone looks happy, they must be doing well.
fact: Many people go to work, take care of their families, smile in photos, and struggle in their personal lives as they continue to live their daily lives. Mental health issues during pregnancy and postpartum are not always visible.
mythology: Depression occurs only after the baby is born.
fact: Mental health symptoms can begin during pregnancy as well as postpartum. Hormonal changes, stress, sleep disturbances, medical complications, and major life changes can all affect your mental health.

fact: Mental health conditions are medical conditions, not personal failings. Support, connection and compassionate care make a huge difference.
At this stage in life, it’s so important to encourage your loved ones to create a safe, nonjudgmental space for honest conversations and offer practical support where possible, whether that means checking in regularly, helping with meals or child care, or simply listening.
It is important to remember that not all reproductive processes look the same. Individuals and families experiencing infertility, miscarriage, traumatic birth experiences, or NICU stays may also experience significant emotional difficulties and should receive support and understanding.
As awareness about maternal mental health continues to grow, communities across northern Nevada are working to reduce stigma and increase support for families. Ms. Thompson serves on the board of directors for the Nevada chapter of Postpartum Support International and is helping organize the first birth support event. There is also a growing recognition that healthcare professionals need more specialized education in this area. About the professor
Andrea Thompson, APRN, PMHNP-BC, FNP-C, PMH-C, is an instructor at the Orbis School of Nursing and is dually certified as a family practice and psychiatric nurse practitioner specializing in reproductive and perinatal mental health. Her clinical experience spans outpatient reproductive psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, emergency psychiatric consultation, and primary care, with a focus on integrative and collaborative care models for women and families. Thompson currently serves as Director of Mental Health at FEM Women’s Wellness in Reno, where she presents and guest lectures on topics related to perinatal mental health, psychopharmacology, trauma-informed care, and women’s mental health at local and national conferences and academic programs. A mother of four, she is passionate about awareness, education, and support for families during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
