Trump to ‘pressure’ China over Iran during summit with Xi
A senior official in US President Donald Trump’s administration said the president would “put pressure” on China over its support for Iran when he visits China later this week.
The official said the Iranian issue would be one of the topics of the summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying Trump had spoken several times with Xi about Iran and Russia.
He said these discussions focused on the revenue China provides to the two countries as well as goods and arms export potential. He said those talks would continue.
The official also said Trump would “put pressure” on China regarding U.S. sanctions on Chinese companies that the U.S. says support Iran.
On the Taiwan issue, the official said there had been no change in U.S. policy and no changes were expected in the future.
Trump and Xi are also expected to discuss the launch of a new framework on how to expand bilateral trade and investment, and exchange views on the aerospace, agricultural products and energy sectors.
The White House announced Sunday that Trump would arrive in Beijing on Wednesday evening, meet with Xi on Thursday morning and visit the Temple of Heaven, a world heritage site, with Xi in the afternoon. The White House also said Trump would attend a state banquet in the evening and take part in a working lunch with Xi on Friday before leaving China.
