“We didn’t want to lose hockey,” Baton Rouge announces new team after Zydeco collapse
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – A new Baton Rouge hockey team will drop the puck on the season starting this fall.
The move comes less than a month after the city’s last hockey team, the Zydeco, went bankrupt following a major drop in attendance.
“I am incredibly proud to announce that Baton Rouge will be home to a new team and will remain part of the Federal Prospects Hockey League,” said Matt Pace.
Pace joins Andreas Johansson, Ted Goldthorpe and local resident Jacob Hector as team owners for a franchise that does not yet have an official name. That news is expected to come sometime in the next few weeks.
Johansson owns the Binghamton Black Bears, the first team in FPHL history to win three consecutive championships. The Black Bears have also led the league each season under Johansson. He was previously majority owner of the Watertown Wolves, another FPHL franchise that has won three league championships.
Wayne Hodes, general manager of Raising Cane’s River Center, said the team has entered into a three-year lease.
“The previous ownership wanted to go somewhere else, which is fine. But we didn’t want to lose hockey; we wanted to give it a chance,” Hodes said.
The announcement marks a major step for the future of professional hockey in Baton Rouge after the Zydeco filed for bankruptcy following a season that ended without a postseason appearance. The Zydeco began play in 2023 as part of the FPHL, bringing pro hockey back to Baton Rouge after nearly two decades since the Baton Rouge Kingfish left town.
As a co-owner with experience owning championship-caliber FPHL teams, Johansson said it comes down to connections outside the 5,000-seat arena.
“The game is a small part of what we do, and winning on the ice matters; it helps attract fans because everyone wants to see a winner, but it’s about communicating well with your fans, making your fans feel like they’re part of a bigger family, and I think that’s what we have to try to do here,” Johansson said.
“There have been teams before us, exciting moments, passionate fans and people who genuinely cared about the game and wanted it to succeed,” Pace said.
