The Islamabad High Court on Monday ordered the superintendent of Adiala Prison to submit a reply regarding refusal to accept Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s signature on a power of attorney.

Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro presided over the hearing on a petition filed by Imran’s lawyer Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry. Justice Soomro asked about the legal process involved in this case, to which Chaudhry explained that a legal process was in place, referring to prison policy and the precedent set by the Lahore High Court.

He also stressed that prison rules regarding access to prisoners were well defined, citing the Nelson Mandela international rules on prisoners’ rights.

Chaudhry informed the court that despite multiple visits to Adiala Prison and after sending the documents by courier, the power of attorney documents were not accepted and in the latter case, the prison authorities claimed they never received them.

The hearing was adjourned to May 25 as the court issued a notice to the prison superintendent, ordering him to respond by then.

He said the repeated refusals to accept power of attorney documents and deny access to an attorney were part of a broader campaign of political vengeance.

The statement also reiterated that despite these efforts, “Imran Khan has never bowed down and never will,” asserting that the power of the Constitution, the law and the people would ultimately prevail over injustice.
