Release of IK and Bushra: KP CM hints at “peaceful” protests – Pakistan

RAWALPINDI: A visibly disturbed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Tuesday said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has exhausted all legal options and now has no choice but to resort to peaceful protests to press its demands, chief among them the immediate release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Adiala Prison to express solidarity with Khan’s sisters, who arrived at Adiala Prison to meet their brother, Afridi was very clear: when courts stop functioning, people have no choice but to seek justice through protests.

“When the courts of the country are paralyzed, the only option left for the public is to protest. The nation has already seen on November 26 that innocent citizens were fired upon,” he said, adding that similar incidents took place in Muridke against peaceful protesters and during another protest against the United States to express solidarity with Iran in Islamabad, Skardu, Karachi and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

He accused the government of being “thirsty for blood”, asserting that the regime in place can do anything to perpetuate its illegitimate power.

He said there was no margin for error with the PTI and it would proceed cautiously in the current circumstances to achieve its legal and constitutional goals. “We have no choice but to hold a peaceful protest and we will take that route,” he said.

The chief minister said that Pakistan is currently facing a myriad of problems, but instead of resolving the problems, leaders are working to prevent meetings between Khan and his sisters.

Afiridi slammed the government for denying the former prime minister treatment at a hospital of his choice despite a serious infection in his right eye.

He warned that any attempt to crush the PTI through these tactics would not work, adding that the party would continue its struggle for the restoration of the people’s right to rule in the country.

He said the country’s economy is collapsing, young people are leaving the country, but the leaders are silent spectators, which shows how serious they are about the future of the country.

Earlier, the chief minister arrived along with provincial minister Meena Khan Afridi, special assistant to chief minister Shafi Jan and other party leaders. They joined a sit-in organized by Imran Khan’s sisters Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Khan, along with a large number of PTI workers at the Gorakhpur checkpoint.

PTI General Secretary’s lawyer Saman Akram Raja, PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar, MP Atif Khan and other party parliamentarians also participated in the protest.

However, as in previous cases, Khan’s legal team and sisters were not allowed to meet the PTI founding president at Adiala jail.

The sit-in participants chanted slogans demanding the release of Imran Khan, that of his wife and immediate medical attention for him, while raising slogans against the government.
