Iran war casts shadow over BRICS meeting in India

As a two-day meeting of BRICS foreign ministers begins in New Delhi on Thursday, the war in Iran casts its shadow thousands of miles away.

The group, which originally included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has expanded over the years with the inclusion of Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

Iran urged India, which will chair BRICS for 2026, to use the platform to build a consensus condemning US and Israeli actions in the Gulf conflict.

But the United Arab Emirates, which is more closely allied with the United States, opposed it.

Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in March that some BRICS members were directly involved in the conflict, making it “difficult for us to build consensus.”

Another ministry official told Reuters that India hoped to get a joint statement after the latest round of meetings with foreign ministers.

We will report on the meeting over the coming days.

Recap: Tehran threatens to accelerate its nuclear weapons program

Iran has threatened to accelerate its nuclear weapons program after Donald Trump criticized its “rubbish” response to a US peace proposal.

Tehran could enrich uranium up to 90% purity – a level considered weapons-grade – if the country is attacked again, a senior parliamentary official, Ebrahim Rezaei, said on Tuesday.

“One of Iran’s options in case of another attack could be 90 percent enrichment. We will consider it in Parliament,” he posted on X.

Israel demolishes dozens of Palestinian stores

Israeli bulldozers demolished dozens of Palestinian shops this week on the outskirts of a town southeast of Jerusalem, paving the way for a road project linked to settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli authorities say the demolitions are essential to the construction of a road intended to serve local Palestinian communities. However, Palestinian officials present a contrasting view, saying the road is part of a broader project to keep Palestinian vehicles away from a new highway built specifically for nearby Israeli settlements.

This controversial project is located in E1, a strategic section of the West Bank. Israel’s development in this area is widely understood as an attempt to prevent the creation of a viable Palestinian state.

Oil prices fall after three days of rise as Trump heads to China

Oil prices fell Wednesday after three straight sessions of gains as Donald Trump traveled to China for a high-stakes summit with Xi Jinping.

Brent crude lost 73 cents to settle at $107 a barrel and U.S. oil West Texas Intermediate fell 62 cents to $101.60, retreating from a rally that had sent both benchmarks higher as hopes for a lasting ceasefire to end the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran faded.

Benchmarks have been hovering around $100 or above since the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran in late February and Tehran retaliated by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz. Brent jumped about $70 a barrel before the war started.

All airlines cancel flights and add extra fees

Airlines have significantly increased flight cancellations for May, new figures reveal, as the industry grapples with soaring jet fuel prices and concerns over possible shortages.

Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows 296 departures from UK airports were canceled this month as of Tuesday, representing 0.75% of total scheduled flights. This represents a significant increase from the 120 cancellations reported six days earlier.

However, the outlook for the peak summer travel period appears more stable. Weekly schedule reductions for June remain limited to 48 fewer outbound flights, following the cancellation of 0.2 percent of services. July saw a reduction of 31 flights per week, while August shows a minimal decrease of just four flights.

UAE secretly carries out military strikes against Iran: report

The United Arab Emirates carried out covert strikes against Iran during the war started by the United States and Israel earlier this year, according to a report, which would mark the first involvement of a Gulf country in the conflict.

The Gulf monarchy had been Iran’s number one target since its retaliatory attacks began in the region, targeting US-allied states.

The UAE has not publicly acknowledged the strikes, which included an attack on a refinery on Iran’s Lavan island in the Persian Gulf in early April, around the time Donald Trump announced a temporary truce, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The war in Iran has cost the Trump administration $29 billion so far

The Pentagon estimates the cost of the U.S. war in Iran so far at $29 billion, an increase of $4 billion from an estimate provided late last month.

The vast majority of the amount, about $24 billion, is related to munitions replacement and equipment repairs, but also includes operational costs needed to maintain deployed forces, the Pentagon told lawmakers.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced tough questions yesterday from Republican and Democratic lawmakers about ending the Trump administration’s plan in the Iran war.

“I disagree with the statement that the ammo has run out in a public forum,” Hegseth said. “That’s not true.”
