I hope this memo finds you lounging on your Amity Island porch, a safe distance from large bodies of water or oversized carnivores.
If so, ignore this. But if you feel like serving the public again as only you can, then please move to Los Angeles and run for mayor.
For what? because Los Angeles is hungry for your particular pathological optimism in the face of certain carnage.
I know what the critics say. They highlight your record as mayor in 1975, as depicted in the film “Jaws”. They say you ignored the experts. They say you should let a great white shark turn a picturesque New England summer into a buffet.
None of that matters anymore. Lying is the foundation of 21st century American government. The fact that you’re a movie character is hardly disqualifying, since you’re no more fictional than the civic leaders of Los Angeles.
In the City of Angels, politics is organized around the collective denial of existential threats. The mayor and his adversaries, the unions and the business community, keep pretending that all the problems are manageable. Neighborhoods could burn fire cyclonesbut the most powerful people in Los Angeles won’t add emergency capacity. AI could threaten the city’s iconic industry, but Los Angeles is responding with ineffective production tax breaks.

And when the federal government sends masked agents to kidnap foreign-looking people on the streets, our leaders call on even more feds to “protect” Los Angeles during major international events.
Now you might ask why does Los Angeles need Mayor Larry Vaughn when our politicians already have their heads in the sand?
Because our people are fed up with our local hacks. Mayor Karen Bass is politically dead, unable to reach 30% in election polls. One of the challengers, Nithya Raman, offers a center-left agenda indistinguishable from Bass’s. Spencer Pratt, a reality TV villain running on a MAGA-style platform, is an even more cartoonish character than you.
Now I know you have other options besides Los Angeles. You’re still popular – “Jaws” showed more box office bite when it was released. 50th anniversary reissue last year than most new Hollywood feature films. And irresponsible officials around the world want your leadership.
“The real hero of Jaws is the mayor,” Boris Johnson, former mayor of London, once said. “A gigantic fish eats all your voters and it decides to keep the beach open.”
But Los Angeles is your best opportunity to use your optimism in the face of danger and disaster. Ultimately, Los Angeles will benefit as well. By letting the sharks devour us, the city can be reborn.
Like Amity, Los Angeles desperately needs tourists – in our case, to pay for the multibillion-dollar Olympics and World Cup. The city government – already facing a billion-dollar deficit – foolishly agreed to cover Olympic financial losses.
But the Trump administration’s actions — travel bans, aggressive screening, threats to bring ICE and ICE to the Games — will discourage visitors. Then, by declaring that the Games and the World Cup will go well and that people should come to Los Angeles anyway, you’ll seal the deal. Everyone knows what you did in “Jaws” (and its sequel). They’d be crazy to show up after you tell them the water is safe!
The Games will lose billions. This Olympic debt shark will eat the city alive, triggering municipal bankruptcy.
Mind you, this Olympics-induced government collapse would be a feature, not a bug.
Our current municipal government produces incessant corruption while failing to repair streetlights or sidewalks. So bankruptcy could lead to the dissolution of a municipal mess, forcing the city to merge with more competent Los Angeles County to create a powerful regional government.
Such a government would have the capacity to provide excellent services, repair infrastructure… and face the threats of the 21st century.
In this movie, you wouldn’t just be the mayor who let the shark in. You would be the mayor who bankrupts us in the future. You would be the hero.
Come to Los Angeles, Larry. Help us ignore the fins in the water.
