Turkish court overturns leadership of main opposition party CHP, sparking unrest

A Turkish court on Thursday annulled the 2023 leadership election of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), the official Anadolu news agency reported, in a sharp escalation against the country’s embattled opposition.

The ruling overturns the result of the leadership election that named current party leader Özgür Özel and ordered that former longtime party chairman Kemal Kılıcdaroglu, who lost the election to Özel, take over as interim leader.

In response, the party urged its core members to gather at its Ankara headquarters.

This news caused a fall of more than 6% in Istanbul’s BIST 100, Türkiye’s main stock exchange.

The case involves allegations of vote buying at the CHP’s November 2023 congress, with prosecutors alleging that Özel secured his own election by pressuring some delegates with promises of jobs and other bribes.

In October, an Ankara court dismissed a previous vote-buying case regarding that election as baseless, but prosecutors appealed the decision, with the court ruling in their favor.

Critics say the vote-buying affair is a politically motivated attempt to undermine Turkey’s oldest political party, which scored a huge victory over President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling AK Party in 2024 local elections and rose in the polls.

The CHP has steadfastly denied all accusations, accusing the government of using the judiciary to carry out a “political coup.”

Former party leader Kılıcdaroglu, now 77, was a lackluster politician who racked up a series of electoral defeats and made almost no dent in the armor of Erdoğan’s AKP.

After Özel took power, he led the CHP to a resounding victory in local elections within a few months.

He then became the face of Turkey’s largest street protests in a decade, sparked in March last year by the arrest and imprisonment of presidential candidate Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Widely seen as one of the only politicians capable of beating Erdogan at the polls, İmamoğlu is currently battling a string of court cases alleging everything from corruption to espionage and links to terrorism, charges he says are politically motivated.

He is currently on trial for espionage in a parallel case to a larger corruption case opened March 9 in which prosecutors want him sentenced to 2,430 years in prison.
