Cockroaches overtake Modi’s BJP on Instagram
A parody political party, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), amassed millions of followers in 24 hours on Instagram, the Meta-owned social media platform, to overtake the world’s largest political party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The CJP had less than a million supporters as of Tuesday, but it quickly grew to more than three million supporters as of Wednesday morning and more than 10.8 million supporters as of Thursday. This is more than the 8.7 million people who follow the BJP on the platform.
“I can’t tell you how happy I am today. We are hours away from surpassing the world’s biggest party on Instagram,” CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said in a post Wednesday evening.
“You are about to make history,” he said, hailing India’s youth for “bringing the BJP to its knees in just four days”.
“Think about what else you can do,” he said.
What is cockroach movement?
It all started on May 15 when the Chief Justice of India criticized India’s youth – comparing some of them to “parasites” and “cockroaches” – while speaking about fake degrees during a hearing.
“There are young people like cockroaches who cannot get jobs… some of them become media, some become social media, some become RTI activists, and they start attacking everyone,” he had said.

A parody website has emerged with a five-point manifesto, promising to fight corruption, inter-party defection and increase women’s representation in India’s parliament. Eligibility criteria for joining the parody party include laziness, unemployment and a chronic online presence.
The CJP headquarters is currently “wherever wifi works”.
