Patriotic Brits want to squeeze Putin – not take his oil | Politics | News
A majority of Britons support sanctions on Russian oil, even if it means household bills are more expensive. Despite growing pressures on the cost of living and rising prices triggered by the war in Iran, the British want to maintain pressure on the Kremlin and deny Vladimir Putin the cash needed to finance his war machine in Ukraine.
Just 22 percent of the population told More in Common they want oil sanctions lifted, even if it boosts Russia’s economy and helps its war effort. Support for maintaining sanctions was strongest among Conservatives (68%), followed by Liberal Democrats (66%), Labor voters (60%), UK Reform supporters (59%) and the Greens (54%).
Those who feel financially comfortable are more than twice as likely (45%) to think that removing sanctions would lead to lower energy bills than those who cannot afford their costs and often go without essentials (20%).
Around half (49%) of Britons want Western sanctions against Russia to remain in place until it withdraws from Ukraine. Three in ten (29%) think these measures should be relaxed to “help reach a peace agreement”.
Support for easing sanctions was strongest among Labor voters (42%) and weakest among Liberal Democrats (25%).
The research comes as Britons brace for higher fuel bills. The 13% rise in the energy cap in July means a household using a typical amount of gas and electricity will pay £1,862 a year.
A separate poll by Conservative peer Lord Ashcroft showed that in Russia and the UK, 62% of people think the war will continue for more than several years. This is 20 points more than in the United States. In Ukraine, 56% think the conflict will continue for more than a year.
When asked who would win, 68% of Ukrainians and 62% of Britons said neither side had a clear advantage.
A government spokesperson said: “Russia’s unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine has shattered the peace in Europe. Alongside our international partners and through UK sanctions, we are cutting off Putin’s access to vital cash flows and have implemented the toughest package of sanctions ever imposed on a major economy. The UK alone has sanctioned more than 3,300 Russian people, businesses and ships. The way to cut bills for good and avoid the soaring fossil fuel prices is to go further and faster with the government fighting for clean, local energy that we control.
The government says it has “led the charge” against the “ghost fleet” that Russia uses to export oil. Measures were also announced this month to prevent Russia from evading sanctions by using cryptocurrency.
