Xi Jinping sharply criticized Japan for remilitarization during summit with Trump
Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a meeting with US leader Donald Trump in Beijing, sharply criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for the “remilitarization” of the country.
This was reported to the Financial Times by seven sources close to the negotiations.
They said Xi became emotional and angry when the topic of Japan came up, a move that surprised U.S. officials because the topic had not been discussed between the United States and China before the summit. Some described the verbal attack as the most tense moment of the two-day meeting between the leaders.
After Xi criticized Takaichi and Japan’s increased defense spending, Trump responded by saying Tokyo was being forced to take a tougher security stance because of the threat from North Korea. It was unclear whether he was referring to China, Japan’s main security concern.
Christopher Johnston, a former senior White House official on Japan, said Xi’s “caustic approach” toward Japan and his attempts to take advantage of Trump’s desire to stabilize U.S.-China relations only pushed Tokyo toward greater security independence.
He added that China’s anti-Japanese rhetoric finds no support outside China itself, as Tokyo strengthens its security ties with Australia, the Philippines and even South Korea – countries that fear an aggressive China far more than a “remilitarized” Japan.
Meanwhile, Tokyo is nervous about the state of the U.S.-Japan alliance, from tariffs imposed by Trump on its allies to fears that a war with Iran would weaken the U.S. deterrent against China.
The Financial Times previously reported that the United States warned Japan this month of serious delays in the delivery of 400 Tomahawk missiles that Tokyo had ordered in 2024 to build a “counterattack” capability against China.

Although this does not constitute a policy change, China strongly condemned these comments.
Since then, Beijing has continued to attack Japan, both rhetorically and practically – in particular, the country has restricted exports of dual-use rare earth metals.
