Observer: Jokowi uses political safari to ensure Gibran still has a chance in presidential election
The plan of the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who said that he is ready to start traveling to Indonesia again, is considered to have hidden political motivations.
Esa Unggul University political communications observer Jamiluddin Ritonga said the move was taken to pave the way for his son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to run again in the upcoming 2029 presidential election (Pilpres).
Jamiluddin revealed that Jokowi wanted to show that his mass base and political capital at the grassroots level were still very strong.
This signal was deliberately sent to senior officials of political parties, including President Prabowo Subianto, in order to maintain their political bargaining power at a high level.
“If this comes true, then Jokowi’s wish to nominate his son Gibran Rakabuming to continue to accompany Prabowo in the 2029 presidential election has a chance to come true,” Jamiluddin told reporters on Wednesday (27/5/2026).
According to him, if Jokowi’s negotiating position remains strong, the political elite will not have many options.
“Political parties and Prabowo have no choice but to continue serving as Prabowo’s companion,” he continued.
In addition to securing Gibran’s position, Jamiluddin analyzed that there was a second target for this political safari.
Jokowi would like to strengthen the electability of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) so that it can gain access to Senayan in the 2029 legislative elections (Pileg).
“This goal must be achieved so that the PSI can increase its level to become a middle-class party. This increase is necessary so that the PSI can negotiate politically in the eyes of other political parties,” he explained.
However, Jamiluddin believes that Jokowi’s efforts to achieve these two political goals will not be easy.
He highlighted a change in public perception of Jokowi’s figure, which is currently considered full of controversy.
“Jokowi is currently no longer as important a figure as he was when he was president. Currently, Jokowi is no longer a patron, but rather a controversial figure,” he stressed.
He also added that declining public trust and disappointment among some fanatical supporters would be sharp stones for the former Solo mayor’s political maneuverings.
According to him, although there are still loyal supporters, the number of these groups is no longer significant.
“So achieving these two goals is definitely not easy. Moreover, Jokowi’s trust is very low in the public eye, so these two goals will be increasingly difficult to achieve,” he concluded.
Previously, Secretary General of Projo Freddy Alex Damanik said that Jokowi would return to the mountains to welcome the public in June 2026.
He revealed that the former DKI Jakarta Governor’s health condition had recovered to 99 percent.
“His health has recovered to 99 percent, and it is planned that next month (June) he will travel around Indonesia again to greet people. Pak Jokowi will be accompanied by volunteers when visiting an area,” said Freddy, Wednesday (13/5/2026).
