“For now, Turkey’s opinion on Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership is not positive,” says Erdogan
Turkey, a long-time NATO member, is following discussions about Finland and Sweden wanting to join the alliance, but has no positive views so far, the country’s president said Friday.
“We are currently monitoring developments. We currently do not have a positive position on the issue of Sweden and Finland joining NATO,” Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul.
Claiming that “Scandinavian countries are like guest houses of terrorist groups”, Erdogan added: “There are supporters of terrorism in Parliament. We cannot be positive in this regard.”
In July 2020, Turkey criticized a video meeting between the Swedish foreign minister and members of the YPG/PKK terrorist group, the Syrian branch of the PKK. The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the incident “raises serious questions about Sweden’s approach to combating terrorism as a priority issue.”
Under NATO rules, any decision on enlargement must be made “by unanimous agreement,” effectively giving Turkey the power to veto any new member.

Regarding the US decision to lift sanctions against Syrian regions controlled by the YPG/PKK, Erdogan stressed that the YPG/PKK is a terrorist group and that “Turkey cannot accept” such a decision.
“We do not have the luxury of ignoring terrorists. We say this to all countries that seem friendly to us,” he said, urging them to “be careful” of their actions.
The YPG continues to control large swaths of northeastern Syria, with support from the United States.
The PKK is a designated terrorist organization in Türkiye and the United States. But Washington has refrained from naming the YPG/PKK in the same way and continues to collaborate with them in the region against the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group, despite Ankara’s categorical protests.
Regarding Operation Claw-Lock launched by Turkey in Zap, northern Iraq, in April to combat the hideouts of PKK terrorists across the Turkish border, Erdogan said: “Currently, 82 terrorists have been neutralized in Operation Claw-Lock until yesterday. »
During its more than 35-year terrorist campaign against Turkey, the PKK is responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.
