How Americans view US-China relations
Last time we asked this question an Economist/YouGov survey Three years ago, twice as many Americans prioritized taking a strong stance against China as those who prioritized maintaining good relations (51% versus 24%).
If armed conflict were to break out between China and Taiwan, 30% of Americans believe the United States should help protect Taiwan through military force; Half as many (16%) say the US military should not intervene.
63% of Americans know that China currently has nuclear weapons. Far fewer – 11% – think China should be allowed to have them.

Methodology: The survey was conducted May 18-22, 2026 among 1,068 adult U.S. citizens. Respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-in panel to be representative of adult U.S. citizens. A random sample (stratified by gender, age, race, education, geographic region, and voter registration) was selected from the 2019 American Community Survey. The sample was weighted based on gender, age, race, education, region of the United States, 2024 presidential vote, election turnout, and 2020 presidential vote, party identification of basis and current voter registration status. The 2024 presidential vote, at the time of weighting, was estimated at 48% for Harris and 50% for Trump. Demographic weighting targets come from the 2019 American Community Survey. Base party identification is the respondent’s most recent response, given around November 8, 2024, and is weighted by the distribution estimated at that time (31% Democratic, 33% Republican). The margin of error for the overall sample is approximately 4%.
