Donald Trump calls for amendments to proposed ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran

US President Donald Trump requested several amendments to the proposed US-Iran peace deal during a Situation Room meeting on Friday, Axios reported on Sunday, citing a senior administration official and a second source briefed on the matter.

While Trump wants the proposed memorandum of understanding signed as quickly as possible, two U.S. officials told Axios that he wants to strengthen several points in the deal before it is signed, including regarding Iran’s enriched uranium.

“These are more specific details on how the United States obtains the materials and the timing,” a senior administration official said, according to Axios. “There will be a deal. We will see how imminent it is. We are prepared to wait for the president to get what he is asking for.”

“It could take a week. It could be less. It could be more. By the turn of the week, we hope to have something,” the official added.

A second source added that Trump was considering changing some terms of the deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

However, the official further noted that Trump was informed that it would take several days to receive the Iranian response because “they are literally in caves and don’t use email.”

The New York Times reported Saturday that Trump was also “concerned about parts of the potential deal that would include unfreezing funds for the Iranians.”

Axios reported Thursday that the proposed memorandum of understanding would last 60 days and begin negotiations toward a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

A source close to the negotiating team reportedly told semi-official Iranian media outlet Tasnim on Thursday that if the text of a deal was finalized, it would be shared with Pakistani mediators and then announced.
