ISTANBUL (AP) — Tens of thousands of supporters of the ousted leader of Turkey’s main opposition party marched through central Ankara on Saturday.
Ozgur Ozel was removed from his post as head of the Republican People’s Party, or CHP, by court order on May 21. Many people view the move as a politically motivated attempt to neutralize the opposition.
Crowds had gathered earlier in Guven Park, in the heart of the Turkish capital, to hear Ozel give a speech condemning his expulsion. They then joined him for an impromptu march to the mausoleum of Turkey’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
“They are trying to replace the elected CHP president and appoint an administrator,” Ozel told his supporters. “Today is the day to relaunch our march towards power. I would have liked this to be an internal question of the party. It is not an internal question of the CHP. It is a question between (President) Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the nation.
The appeals court ruling overturned a vote at the 2023 party convention that named Ozel as CHP leader. The court ruling replaced him with his predecessor, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, sparking outrage among party supporters.
Ozel, 51, succeeded Kilicdaroglu, 77, after 13 years of virtually ineffective opposition to Erdogan.
Ozel presented the trial, centered on alleged irregularities in congressional voting, as the latest legal attack on cogeneration. Criminal cases across the country, mostly alleging corruption in CHP-run municipalities, have seen hundreds of elected officials and party members arrested.
The government insists that Turkish courts are impartial and act independently of political pressure.
As people gathered at Guven Park, Kilicdaroglu organized a rival rally at the CHP headquarters in Ankara, which the police stormed last Sunday to eliminate Ozel and his supporters.
Speaking to a much smaller audience, Kilicdaroglu condemned the party’s previous administration for overseeing widespread corruption.
The CHP is tied with the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, in the most recent opinion polls and, although the next election is not scheduled until 2028, many expect Erdogan to push for early elections.
Ozel dealt a major blow to the AKP in the 2024 municipal elections, strengthening the opposition’s hold on key cities it had won five years earlier, including Istanbul and Ankara.
The CHP Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamogluhas emerged as the most likely challenger to Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey since 2003, in the upcoming presidential vote. But he has been jailed since March last year while facing several criminal cases it could see him sentenced to decades behind bars.
